After her divorce in 1988, she used her settlement money to buy her home, Bramasole, a 5-acre, 200-year old Tuscan farmhouse (Random House, 2012). When teaching at San Francisco State, she would spend her summer breaks in Italy. At SFU she was the director of The Poetry Centers and the chair of the Creative Writing Department (Brennan, 2012). ![]() Mayes was also a Creative Writing professor at San Francisco State University. She was also a frequent contributor in newspapers like the New York Times (Brennan, 2012).
